I don’t often review books but Jason Bird’s Strolling for Dollars: How You Can Make a Living Doing Close-Up Magic comes with a premium price tag, but unfortunately offers little in return. While beautifully produced, the book brings almost nothing new to the table for working magicians. Most of its advice echoes well-worn principles already covered—often far more effectively—in classic, more affordable resources. And Jason Bird isn’t exactly a household name in magic so why would one want to take advice from someone who is virtually unknown?
For performers hoping to elevate their professional close-up work, this book is unlikely to justify its cost. With so many richer, more insightful texts available, this one feels more like an expensive repackaging than a valuable contribution. In short: save your money and steer clear from this overly expensive piece of garbage. Seriously $100 for a book that should be $10. Upon reviewing some of Jason’s other writings, definitely avoid his books at all cost because simple editing seems to escape Jason.
